Depending on where you study in Sweden, you have several choices on how to get to Stockholm. These include the train (SJ), bus (SWEBUSS), or in some cases, perhaps even flying. Regardless of how you plan to get to Stockholm for the trip departure, it is recommended to purchase your train, bus or plane tickets as far in advance as possible, using your Swedish university student card to get a student discount.
If you plan to fly to either Stockholm-Arlanda, or Stockholm-Bromma, please keep in mind that in some cases, the airline may require that you have your passport to board the aircraft. Please check with the airline to find out what type of identification they require, as we may have your passport for visa processing.
Here are the instructions on getting to the Tallink Silja Line ferry terminal from various places around Stockholm.
TRANSFER BUS
The buses leave from Vasagatan 16. If you arrive by train, you take the main exit from the Central Station, cross the street and then the bus stop is near the Forex-office. If you arrive by bus you will arrive at the “Cityterminalen”, from there you follow the signs for “Centralstation” and then find the main exit.
The bus trip costs 50 SEK/person and the departure times are 14:05, 15:05 and 16:40. You can purchase the tickets with cash (or on the boat for the way back).
TAXI
If you prefer to take a TAXI to the ferry terminal, there is one taxi station by the exit named “Klarabergsviadukten”, and outside of the “Cityterminalen”, there is also one outside the main entrance of the Central Station.
In Stockholm the more trustworthy taxi companies are Taxi Stockholm (08-15 00 00), Taxi Kurir (0771-86 00 00), Taxi 020 (020-20 20 20) and Top Cab (08-33 33 33). Among these the price for a trip to Värtahamnen is about 200 SEK/car.
SUBWAY
If you want to take the SUBWAY and arrive at the “Cityterminalen”, you must follow the signs for “Centralstation” and then the signs for “Tunnelbana, Metro”. If you arrive at the Central Station you follow the signs for “Tunnelbana, Metro” (Subway is marked by a T in Stockholm).
Take the subway RED LINE number 13 towards “Ropsten” from track 3 and get off at the station “Gärdet”, a trip of approximately 6 minutes.
Take the exit named “Värtahamen” and follow the signs for “Värtahamnen Tallink Silja Line” a walk of approximately 500m.
On your way to the subway you can purchase your subway tickets from either “SL-Center” or “Pressbyrån”. They accept both payments by card and cash and the prices are 36 SEK/adult and 20 SEK/child (under 20 years old). It is a good idea to buy the return tickets at the same time if you plan to go back by subway. Don’t buy your tickets at the ticket window in the subway station since it’s more expensive there and they only accept cash.
How to get back to Stockholm Central Station after the trip:
In the ferry terminal you follow the signs for “Exit, Taxi, Bus” if you want to go back by TAXI or TRANSFER BUS. If you want to go back by SUBWAY, you follow the signs for “Metro City”.
After exiting the terminal you follow the signs for “Tunnelbana”. In the subway you take the subway towards “Norsborg” and get off at “T-centralen”.
